Tropical Storm Helene Update - 9-25-2024
As of 7:45 this morning not much has changed for Lake County since yesterday’s update.
Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued for Lake County. Tropical Storm Helene will be a large storm, and impacts will be felt well outside of the cone. Conditions are forecast to deteriorate late tonight through Thursday morning. Gusty winds are likely along with locally heavy rain. There is also a risk for tornadoes. US National Weather Service Melbourne Florida.
Town Closures
Currently there are a handful of cities within Lake County that have already issued office closers with several cities continuing to monitor the storm. As the City of Mascotte continues to monitor the storm, I am expecting with this afternoon’s update from the EOC, at 2:00 p.m., we will also be closing the offices tomorrow.
State of Emergency
Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued a State of Emergency for counties including Lake.
Sandbags
The City of Mascotte’s Public Works Department is providing sand and sandbags at the public works facility from 8:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. today (9-25-24) for those that are worried about potential flooding. Due to the number of bags on hand we are limiting bags to Mascotte Resident’s. Residents need to bring their own shovels and fill their own bags.
Schools
Lake County schools and district offices will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26.
County Operations
All offices of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26, due to Tropical Storm Helene. All regular business operations are anticipated to resume on Friday, Sept. 27.
Trash Collection
GFL has been notified that the landfill will be closing at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. Due to the early closure of the landfill they will be starting trash collection early. This means cans need to be out before 6:00 a.m. At this time staff is being told Friday's garbage will be picked up as normal. If this changes we will do our best to get information out to residents through Facebook and/or the city's website.
Citizen Information Line
The County's Citizens Information Line (CIL) is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Citizens who need information are encouraged to call the line at 352-253-9999 for assistance. 9-1-1 should only be used to request emergency aid.
